How to clean your list of inactive subscribers with Activecampaign:

In this post, I’ll be showing you how you can remove cold subscribers from your email list who haven’t engaged with your emails for a specific period of time.

Doing this every now and then is important because if you have cold subscribers on your list that have stopped opening your emails, not only will this affect your email deliverability, but you’re also paying for these contacts to be on your list.

So, if they’re not opening your emails, there is no point in them being on your list, and should be removed.

And here’s how you can do exactly that.

Read this FIRST:

Before you remove any unengaged contacts from your list, I would advise you to first send out a re-engagement email campaign.

The reason for this is that some of the contacts still maybe active on your list, but they may have just forgotten about you.

So, create 1 or 2 email automation that send emails to contacts who’ve not opened your emails within a certain period of time.

Here's what you need to do:

Step 1:

Go to your ActiveCampaign account and go to the ‘Contact’ section on the left-hand side (see screenshot).

Step 2:

Once you’re on this section, click on the ‘Lists’ button.

This will take you to all the lists you’ve created within your email list.

So, if different contacts have signed up to your email list via different lead magnets for example, it’ll show these.

Step 3:

Find the list you want to clean.

Then click on the little drop-down arrow next to ‘Import Contacts’.

On this drop-down menu, you’ll see an ‘Engagement management’ button, click on this.

Step 4:

You’ll then be taken to a page where again, it shows you the lists you have.

What you want to do is find the list you want to clean and click on the ‘View Clean Up Options’.

Step 5:

You’ll then be taken to a pop up which is called ‘Remove unengaged contacts’

You’ll then be given two options:

  1. “Unsubscribed all unengaged contacts”

  2. Or “Unsubscribe all unengaged contacts past a certain date”

I’d opt for option two because if you go for option 1, you may be removing new subscribers who’ve not opened an email yet.

So, instead, go for option 2 where you can choose your subscribers who’ve not engaged with your emails for a specific amount of time.

Step 6:

Then the last step is to include the corresponding tag below.

This is so the correct contacts can be removed.

For example, if your list is called ‘Organic List’ there should be an ‘Organic list tab’ that you can include.

Before you go...

And that’s it!

This should allow you to remove contacts who meet the criteria that you’ve selected.

  1. I’ve been using ActiveCampaign and Hubspot for a couple of years now and I can say that ActiveCampaign is the better choice. However, GoHighLevel has upgraded its services and is a great alternative to ActiveCampaign too.

Thanks for this informative blog, I’ll definitely check your other blogs.
